Introducing Free Workout Timer: intervals, no paywall

An interval timer that does the one job and leaves you alone.

By Josh · July 9, 2026

Free Workout Timer is out on iPhone and Android. Set your intervals, press start, and put the phone down. It counts you through the work and rest rounds with clear cues, and it keeps running when the screen locks.

What it does

Build an interval workout: work time, rest time, rounds, and sets. Common formats like Tabata are a couple of taps. Press start and the timer calls out each round, so you never have to look at the screen mid set. It keeps time in the background, so locking the phone or switching apps does not stop the count.

No paywall on the part you came for

Interval timers are one of the clearest examples of the pattern I keep writing about. The timer itself is simple, so the money has to come from somewhere: a subscription for extra timers, a wall in front of custom intervals, or ads between your rounds. If you have used Seconds or one of the other interval timers and bounced off the price or the upsells, this is the same shape of tool with none of that. Every feature is in the app, for free, the first time.

What it collects

Nothing. No account, no analytics, no ads. The timer runs on your phone and has no reason to phone home, so it does not. You can check that yourself, because the whole app is open source on GitHub.

Get it

Free Workout Timer is on the App Store and Google Play, free. It is supported the way all of these apps are: by the people who find it useful. No ads, no subscription. If it earns a spot in your routine and you want to chip in, there is a donate link, and the app is exactly the same whether you do or not.
